The Meaning Behind It

Lucia means "light" in Latin — and Saint Lucia, whose feast day falls on December 13th, has been celebrated for centuries as a bringer of light in the darkest time of year: the one who comes before the dawn, who carries the candles through the winter darkness, and whose name and whose presence are a promise that the light is coming.
